Intro to Pavement Preservation (Roads Scholar Course 5)-ASPHALT PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE PRACTICES Basic Certification Course Course Overview: This certification ensures the participant has the basic technical knowledge of maintenance techniques for asphalt pavements, including pavement preservation concepts, preventive and corrective repairs, identification of types of pavement distress and their causes, selection of candidates for pavement preservation, and methods for repairing pavement failures. Course material reviews the importance of preventive maintenance to the life of an asphalt pavement, helping the participants to identify common asphalt distress, the cause of the distress, and the appropriate treatment(s). The latest techniques, materials, and equipment will be reviewed with an emphasis on repairing the asphalt distress properly the first time. Current industry standards to properly repair problems such as cracking and potholes will be presented in detail, along with the basics of treatments such as seal coats, micro surfacing, and overlays. Participants will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: ? Benefits of an asphalt pavement preventive maintenance program ? Preventive maintenance techniques ? Pavement condition evaluation and distress types ? Selection of the proper treatment for pavement distress ? Application knowledge of different treatments for pavement distress ? Selection of candidates for pavement preservation
